SACRAMENTO, CA, May 24, 2004 - Hansen Information Technologies (Hansen®) today announced that Australia's newest rail project will use Hansen’s Linear Railway Solution to manage its railway infrastructure assets. The railway is the longest north-south railway in the world, measuring 1390 miles (2240 kilometers) between Australia’s most northern city, Darwin and Tarcoola, 510 kilometers from Port Pirie in South Australia.
The agreement includes a complete railway asset management solution to Freightlink, the operator of the newly commissioned railway that links northern and southern Australia. The implementation of the Hansen system is designed to meet the specific requirements of the railway project currently managed as a Build, Own, Operate and Transfer Back (BOOT) scheme, with lease arrangements covering 50 years of operation before the railway is handed back to the Northern Territory and South Australian Governments. The sponsors of the BOOT scheme include Australia’s leading engineering, construction and transport logistics companies:
- Kellogg Brown & Root (KBR)
- John Holland Group
- Barclay Mowlem
- Macmahon Holdings
At the core of the asset management solution is Hansen’s Linear Railway Solution which will allow for the creation of a rail-specific asset register and subsequently support the work management, inventory management and advanced inspection requirements of the network. This, together with Hansen’s GIS integration and FieldWORKS application, will provide a complete asset management solution to support the business functions for the BOOT scheme operations between Darwin and Tarcoola.
The north-south rail link, first proposed in 1911, took 31 months to complete and was a visionary infrastructure project with the potential to bring immense benefits to Australian businesses by promoting regional development and international trade. FreightLink is looking to transport 350,000 tons of freight within the first year of operation.
According to the AustralAsia Railway Corporation (AARC) website, the newest portion of the railway, Darwin to Alice Springs, covers a distance of 879 miles (1415 kilometers) at a cost $A1.2 billion. Other facts given about the newest part of the railway include:
- 1,500 people were employed at the peak of construction
- 90 bridges
- 1500 culvert locations
- 8 million sleeper fastenings
- 90 bridges
- 146,000 tonnes of railway delivered
- 2835 million tonnes of ballast
- 2 million sleepers
- 110,000 flash butt welds
