Melbourne, Victoria, AUSTRALIA, February 21, 2005 – American-based company Hansen Information Technologies (Hansen®) today announced that it will open a new Hansen 8 Development Centre in Melbourne that will provide customer service to its customers outside of North America. Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Minister, Marsha Thomson, said the centre will produce up to 30 new high-end jobs for Victorians and will be a boost for Victoria's ICT industry.

The announcement was made at the Annual Australian Hansen User Group meeting which opened on February 21 in Melbourne. Keynote addresses were delivered by The Honorable Carlo Carli, Parliamentary Secretary to the Premier for Infrastructure, and Chuck Hansen, Chairman of Hansen Information Technologies.

"The time difference between Victoria and the USA offers unique opportunities – while the USA sleeps we can be working to deliver solutions for their ICT problems," said Ms. Thomson.

"The combination of our European heritage, location in Asia, and strength in ICT, gives Victoria a set of insights, links and expertise that is unique in the world – and it is a combination with the potential to create exciting new opportunities for American companies like Hansen Information Technologies."

“We are delighted to be expanding our company in Australia to handle the localization and support for our growing base of international customers and partners,” stated Chuck Hansen. “A number of our most innovative enhancements have been a direct result of recommendations from our Australian and New Zealand users, so it is only fitting for us to co-develop our international language versions from here, providing 24-hour coverage.”

Ms. Thomson said Hansen Information Technologies chose Australia for the facility over other countries in the Asia Pacific, and over expanding their US facilities. "The company began operations here in Melbourne in 2001 with six employees. That number has now grown to 50 across Australasia – more than eight times the original staffing levels – with 30 of those based in Victoria," said Ms. Thomson.

"Historically, all the company's software development was done in the USA. But rather than expanding the American operation or opening a facility in another country – they have chosen Melbourne as home for the Hansen 8 Development Centre.”

"Companies, like Hansen Information Technologies are choosing Victoria over other international locations because of our key strengths in ICT skills development – we are Australia's leading producer of IT and computing graduates – and a national leader in ICT research and development."

"Over the past three years the Victorian Government has secured ICT investments worth more than $660 Million, creating more than 5000 new high-tech jobs for the State," the Minister said.

The Minister said that this was an obvious example of Victoria benefiting from the off-shoring of global operations by multinational companies.

"Victoria is an ICT destination for many of the world's best companies because of its skill base, ICT capability and business environment," said Ms. Thomson.
