SACRAMENTO, Calif., October 1, 2004 - Hansen Information Technologies (Hansen®) today announced that the City of Monterey, CA (population 29,674) was recently awarded “The 10 Most Efficient Fleet Operations in North America” at the Utility Expo West 2004 in Santa Clara, CA.

The award marks a milestone in the City of Monterey’s efforts to run an efficient organization.

“Like many things--what you can not measure, you can not improve," said Hans Uslar, Deputy Public Works Director, City of Monterey. “Hansen helped us to create new opportunities to run our shop smoother and cost effectively.”

Since 1998 the City has continuously improved their operation with the implementation and use of Hansen’s reliable work management system that allows them to establish a timely charge back system. In 1999 the City integrated their gas fueling software, Gas-Boy, into the work management system improving their charge back system. In 2000-2001 the City looked at their replacement standards and started eliminating vehicles, which should not have been in the fleet. In 2003 with the addition of Lead Mechanic and Parts Clerk, the City helped the Mechanical Supervisor to better concentrate on administrative aspects of his job by changing the layout of their shop operation. Since then the City has accomplished some other milestones like the establishment of a business plan, an innovative approach to sell surplus vehicles, and a common sense approach to preventative maintenance.

The Utility Expo West 2004 is an annual utility equipment show for utility professionals from western utilities and construction companies, telecom companies, government and public works operations. The 100 Best Fleets Program is an annual fleet management analysis event that rewards outstanding fleet operations and helps organizations measure their operations against industry peers.

Of the award’s 18 mission-critical categories, the City of Monterey had 15 categories rated as standard or above. The City of Monterey has a 2003-2004 operating budget of $70.4 million.
